What Personal Training Actually Costs Across Illinois in 2026

Personal training in Illinois runs about $50 to $150 per session. Where you land in that range depends on your zip code, your coach's experience, and whether you train alone or share the hour with two or three other people. That last factor moves the number more than anything else, which is why semi-private training is where most people end up.

You probably called a few studios and got a few different answers. One quoted a monthly membership. One quoted a package of twelve sessions. One would not give you a number at all until you came in. That is a frustrating way to shop for anything, especially something you are considering paying for every week.

Here is the honest breakdown, including what we charge and what we do not.

Why the Range Is So Wide

Two trainers can charge $60 and $140 for the same sixty minutes. The gap usually comes down to four things.

  • Location: Rent on the North Shore is not rent in Peoria. A studio paying Northbrook or Winnetka commercial rates has to price accordingly.

  • Experience and credentials: A coach two years out of a weekend certification prices differently than someone who has spent fifteen years working with post-surgical clients and adults in their sixties.

  • Session format: One-on-one is the most expensive hour you can buy. Semi-private splits the coach's time across two to four people and cuts the per-session cost roughly in half.

  • What is bundled in: Some rates include an assessment, a written program, and regular check-ins. Some are just an hour of someone counting your reps.

What You Pay by Region

These are the ranges we see quoted around the state. They are market observations from shopping the competition, not survey data, so treat them as a starting point rather than gospel.

  • North Shore suburbs: $85 to $150 per session for one-on-one. Northbrook, Glenview, Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park and Glencoe all sit in this band.

  • City of Chicago: $75 to $130, with the higher end concentrated downtown and in the North Side neighborhoods.

  • Central and downstate Illinois: $45 to $85 is common.

  • Big-box gym in-house training: Often $50 to $90, but you are usually assigned whoever is available, and turnover at those chains is high.

  • Semi-private and small group: $40 to $75 per session almost anywhere in the state.

💡 Pro Tip: Compare cost per session, not cost per month. A $600 monthly membership sounds steep until you learn it covers three sessions a week. A $400 package sounds reasonable until you find out it is four sessions.

The Costs Nobody Quotes You

The session rate is rarely the whole bill. Ask about these before you sign anything.

  • A separate gym membership: At most big-box gyms, training is on top of the membership fee, not instead of it.

  • Minimum package sizes: Some places will not sell you fewer than twenty sessions. That is a large check to write for a coach you have met once.

  • Cancellation windows: A 24-hour policy is standard and fair. A 48-hour policy with a full-session charge is worth knowing about in advance.

  • Automatic renewal: Read how the package renews and how you stop it.

  • Expiration dates: Sessions that expire in ninety days are a problem if you travel for work or spend part of the winter somewhere warmer.

Semi-private strength training session with a coach and small group at Fuel Your Training in Northbrook, IL

Semi-private training at our Northbrook studio. Two to four people, each on their own program, one coach on the floor.

Where Semi-Private Training Fits

Semi-private is not a group class. Nobody is shouting over music while twenty people do the same circuit. You get your own written program, and your coach is on the floor with two or three other people who also have their own programs.

For most adults, this is the right amount of coaching. You get form corrections, weight adjustments, and someone who notices when your left shoulder is bothering you again. What you give up is the coach's undivided attention for sixty straight minutes, which most people do not actually need after the first month.

📌 Key Takeaway: If your budget is $200 a month, you can have two one-on-one sessions or four semi-private sessions. Four is almost always going to produce more progress than two.

What It Costs at Fuel Your Training

Our semi-private training starts at $50 per session. Two to four people on the floor, each on an individual program, at our studio at 1430 Paddock Dr in Northbrook.

One-on-one pricing depends on how often you train and when you want to come in, so I would rather quote you honestly over the phone than post a number here that turns out not to apply to your schedule. Call and I will tell you in about ninety seconds.

The first session is free. Not a tour, not a sales pitch — an actual assessment where we look at how you move and talk about what you are trying to get back to. Plenty of people do that session and decide we are not the right fit. That is a fine outcome.

⚠️ Warning: Be careful about prepaying for large packages before you have trained with the coach more than once. If a studio pressures you to buy twenty sessions on your first visit, that tells you something about how they operate.

Questions to Ask Before You Pay

  • Who will actually coach me? At larger gyms the person who sells you the package is often not the person who trains you.

  • Do I get a written program? If the answer is vague, your sessions will be improvised.

  • What happens if I get hurt or need surgery? A good studio will pause your package. Ask.

  • Have you worked with my situation before? Bad knee, replaced hip, twenty years away from a gym — ask for specifics.

  • What is the cancellation policy, in writing?

We covered how to evaluate a coach in more depth in our guide to personal trainer costs in Northbrook, which gets into the local market specifically.

The Short Version

  • Statewide range: Roughly $50 to $150 per session for one-on-one training.

  • North Shore range: $85 to $150 is typical for one-on-one.

  • Semi-private: $40 to $75 per session across Illinois. Ours starts at $50.

  • The real comparison: Cost per session and how many sessions you will realistically attend, not the sticker price of the package.

  • Watch for: Separate memberships, session expiration dates, and long minimum commitments.
